Word filter

by Rita Foelker

When Karenna got to the youth meeting she greeted the group.

When they heard the girl's warm greeting, everybody turned to see the pendent around her neck, a beautiful colorless crystal.

After she passed by them, Armando nudged Carmen:

"Did you see!? Karenna is wearing a crystal pendent!"

"So what?" - asked his friend.

"This is a spiritist house. We don't use this kind of "esoteric things" here. We have to watch out, my dear."

Carmen thought about it:

"Karenna is a good friend. You shouldn't talk about her like that."

"Well... It is weird, isn't it?"

"There is nothing weird about it. It is her crystal and her neck."

"But this is a spiritist youth group. I will talk to her. If she believes in crystals it's because she doesn't understand Kardec."

"Did you understand him? Did you read about free-will?" - asked Carmen, turning to look at her friend. Then on second thought she added: "If it makes you feel better I will talk to her."

fter the meeting, the group left and Karenna stayed to lock the door that always jammed. Carmen waited until everybody was far away while she thought about Armando's words. Could he be right? Or was he overreacting? A

s far as Carmen knew, the benefits of stones and crystals had not been scientifically proven. But this fact didn't give anyone the right to judge her best friend.

There was a moment of silence between them before Carmen delicately commented:

"That's a nice crystal you are wearing."

"Do you like it? I think I'll never take it off my neck! It is very special..."

"Why?"

"Because Bob gave it to me. Yesterday we celebrated a month of dating!"

"Really? Congratulations!!"

"You know, he says that this is a stone with a special energy... That's what he believes. I'm not sure about it but it was the first thing he gave me that didn't dry up or melt."

"What?"

"The flowers and the ice cream" - laughed Karenna.

"Ah! Well... It is time to go. Shall we?"

"You can go. I need to return a book to the library."

Carmen went upstairs and found Armando waiting for her.

"So? Did you talk to her?"

"No. There was nothing to talk about just to listen."

As they walked she told him about the conversation with Karenna. Armando was embarrassed:

"Yeah. I think I overreacted. Well, I should be watching my own mouth in order not to not talk nonsense!"

"Forget it! What you need is a 'word filter'!" - said his friend smiling.

"What's that?"

"It is a kind of a nonsense filter that you put between your ear and your brain and between your brain and your mouth."

Carmen and Armando laughed while walking to the bus stop.
