Repay evil with good

Age: 10 and over

Dust in the wind

I close my eyes
Only for a moment, then the moment's gone
All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind, ohh

Now, don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind

All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
The wind

What we will need

  • Pictures of the Colosseum in Rome (Italy) (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colosseum)
  • CD Player
  • "Dust in the Wind" sound track performed by Scorpions, Sarah Brightman etc.
  • "Dust in the Wind" lyrics

What we gonna do

  1. Show the pictures of the Colosseum and ask children if they have any idea of what the Colosseum was and what was its purpose. Say that many people were murdered there. Ask what the Colosseum became today.
  2. Ask what could possibly had happen to the people's spirits that died there and in similar places. Brainstorming some ideas and take notes.
  3. Tell briefly the story of Joana de Cusa (from the book "Boa Nova" from Francisco Cândido Xavier/Irmão X Ed. FEB – In Portuguese) You may find a short biography - in Portuguese yet - at http://www.espiritismogi.com.br/biografias/joanna.htm.
  4. Well... what happened if the story was different? What could had happen to her and to her aggressors if she had hated them and took revenge for what they done to her?
  5. Today, the Colosseum is a ruin. Time is destroying the Colosseum and all that it represented. Hand out the lyrics of the song "Dust in the Wind".
  6. Ask the children to do what is told in thesong: close the eyes for a moment and observe that this moment is gone... it is already past.
  7. Develop a rational thought with other examples: evil is a human construction that passes by and only the good last forever; it is not worthy it to repay the evil with evil because it only causes suffering. If we do not follow it, the evil, it will disappear as dust in the wind.
