A Jewish tale

(a tale about the Truth and the Parable)

Age: 10 and over

"Once upon a time, Truth was without clothes or attires visiting the mankind, Truth was as nude as its name. All the people that saw Truth turned their backs to it with shame and fear. Nobody welcomed Truth.

Therefore, Truth walked down the confines of the Earth rejected and disdained.

One afternoon, Truth was very desolated and sad when it met Parable. Parable was walking through gladly on a beautiful and colorful costume.

- Truth, why are you so sad? - Parable asked.

- Because I might be very ugly, the men avoid me so much!

- That's an absurd! - Parable laughed - this is not why the men avoid you. Take it, put on some of my clothes and see what happens.

Then, Truth put on some of the beautiful clothes of Parable and, suddenly, everywhere where the Truth passed by it was welcomed.”

Thus men don’t like to face the naked Truth, they prefer it disguised.

What we will need

  • Copies of the text above for each group.

What we gonna do

  1. Divide the class in groups of 7 students each one and hand out the copies.
  2. Ask the groups to start a debate over the text and the question: "What is the meaning of this tale?"
  3. After 10/15 minutes, the little groups will merge in a big group and everyone will say what understood from the tale.
  4. Talk about the interpretations.

Note: Before the activity we suggest to the coordinator the text "Truth and Reality" from the "Jornal do CEM" (in Portuguese). English version
