Chance or Intelligence?

An activity about God

Age: 8 and over

What we will need

  • a blackboard or a whiteboard.
  • a jigsaw puzzle (an easy one).

What we gonna do

If there are 10 or 11 years-old children, you will begin from the step 1. If the children are younger, you will begin from the step 2.

  1. To warm-up start playing a hang man game with the phrase: "There is no intelligent chance" (See Spirits' Book, question 8).
  2. Show a box with a jigsaw puzzle inside and ask: "Do you think that if I shake this box and throw it on the floor, the puzzle will fall with the picture ready only for chance?"
  3. Throw the pieces of the puzzle on the floor. Call some student who wants to try and do the path 2 again.
  4. Invite some students who want to complete the puzzle. When it is ready, ask: "How did you do it? What did you need to do it: observation, strategy, memory?" - then say that observation, strategy, and memory exist because of the intelligence. The chance cannot be intelligent, it is necessary to be intelligent to complete a puzzle. Ask: "Is it right? Do you agree?".
  5. Ask what other things that need to be perform with intelligence.
  6. Ask questions like: "What about the Universe? Is it chance or a creation of an intelligent agent?"
  7. Go on with the debate…
